Day three in Delhi

We headed out to Connaught Place after breakfast. We alighted the metro at Rajiv Chowk and walked around  in a clockwise direction. It must have been a grand place but is now quite run down and every corner looks like it has been used as a toilet. See the walls near David in this picture.

All the banks we passed had security guards outside with shot guns, some double barrel. Also at the entrance to the Bazar we had to walk through a metal detector and noticed piles of sandbags, some with guys with guns behind them. It made us feel safe seeing all the security around. We managed to buy a pair of headphones with a microphone for Catriona's ipod as she had left her set at home. We priced a pair at both Sydney and Singapore airport at $30, these ones cost us $4. We searched for somewhere to have lunch but nothing around was appealing so we decided to head back to the metro to go to our next destination. After going through the security checkpoint we bumped into Pete and Angela, who we had met the night before on the roof top terrace of our hotel. They were looking for the imperial hotel which the lonely planet said was a special place to visit. It is where Gandhi met with Mountbatten and others to talk about the partitioning of India. We asked if we could join them so we all set off in search of the hotel which was on Janpath. We ended up having lunch on the terrace of the 1911 restaurant which overlooked the gardens.

After lunch we had a walk through the hotel and then ended up having coffee and cake in the bar, where we sat for another hour chatting and enjoying the atmosphere of this grand hotel. Then headed back to the Pooja Palace for our 6pm group meeting for our first trip. After the meeting we had dinner with our group leader Badam and Marcus from Switzerland. The other 4 in our group (all Americans who were travelling together) had made other plans so did not come to dinner with us.
We met up with Pete and Angela again after dinner on the roof top and chatted till just before 11pm, then we headed off to bed.
